My name is Mija (pronounced "Mee-Ha"). My name means "dear one" in Spanish and it’s a good name for me since I am a total snuggler. I am only 6 years old but I have so many health problems that my original owner could no longer afford all of my special care. I had terrible allergies which are now really under good control (my belly was black when I came in to PugSavers but it is now pink and kissable), I also have thyroid problems and worst of all, I am diabetic and the dogtors are having a hard time getting it under control. Because of the diabetes I developed cataracts and have lost most of my sight. But the good news is that if they can get my diabetes under control then PugSavers can have surgery done on my cataracts and I will probably get most of my sight back. This all will be very expensive though so PugSavers is hoping that there are some special angels out there to help me with my ongoing medical care.

My name is Theo and I am an 8 year old total love bug. I have always been in a home with other pugs so I really need to be part of a pack and have another pug or other agreeable dog buddy in my forever home. I am the “typical” black pug boy which means I am sweet and loving. I’m also looking for my forever home.

My name is Archie and I am about 12 years old. I was owned and loved but then my person died. His daughter took me in and loved me but then she and her family sadly lost their home and I was living in the car with her and her 2 children. A few days before Christmas I was turned in to a shelter in far northern California and they reached out to PugSavers since they were filled to the gills and they knew I would not do good in the pound. I was so scared at first I only wanted to eat and drink water in the car but my foster Dad’s have been very gentle with me and have taught me that I will be safe and warm and loved with them. As soon as I put on a few pounds I’m going to be something they call neutered which they tell me is really something great because I have some enlargement of my prostate because I haven’t been neutered before. I’m also going to have my teeth cleaned at the same time if PugSavers can raise enough money. Hopefully the people who love PugSavers can also love me and help me feel better with a dental.

My name is Larry and I'm a little boy around 6 years old. I was a stray and ended up at animal control where I was so shy that no one would take any interest in me. Luckily the rescue coordinator took a liking to me and called rescue to help. I have some scars from prior injuries on my neck and leg, but now I know I am safe and will be loved. My coat is really coarse right now, but with better nutrition, I'm sure it will get better. Would you consider opening up your heart and home to me?

My name is Mei Mei and I'm a sweet little black pug girl that was dumped when I could no longer give my former owner lots of puppies. I'm around 5 years old and I love to snuggle and I really like to play. If there are other dogs in the house, I will want to be fed seperately because I don't like any other dogs messing with my food, but other than that I'm sweet as can be!

UPDATE July '08:
Three weeks after his surgery, Peter was still in incredible pain. No combination of pain meds and ACE could make him comfortable, so we had to get additional x-rays. It turns out one of the pins was too long and was hurting, so he needed more surgery...and another $600 in bills for PugSavers with the x-rays and surgery. He is still going to need 2 more surgeries, one to remove the pins that are still in there, and another to neuter him and remove his baby teeth. This poor little guy has had a rough time of life in his first 8 months!

My name is Peter and I am only 7 months old. Two days ago I was hit by a car and my back left leg and pelvis were broken. My leg was broken really bad as you can see in the xrays. My people could not afford the surgery to fix my leg which was about $ 2,000.00, so they turned me in to PugSavers. They had me get my surgery just hours later. Because my growth plates are not closed in my legs, they had to put pins in my leg to fix it. I will have to have another surgery on this leg in 6 weeks to take the pins out. After all is done, I will be available for adoption. Because I am less than a year old, my adoption fee will be $400.00. If you could help PugSavers with my big vet bills, I sure would be grateful, and they would be too!

Update March 2008:
Elvis had his heart surgery and it was a huge success! He will now be able to live the rest of his life as a "normal" pug and is making up for lost time when he felt so terrible. It looks like his foster parents aren't going to be able to part with him, so he will be a permanent part of their family. PugSavers is still trying to recoup the money spent on the surgery and we appreciate each and every donation that has been made on Elvis' behalf!

My name is Elvis, and even though it's only 9 weeks since I was born, my life has already been a roller coaster of "good news/bad news".

See, my breeder sold me to a loving home. That was good news. Then my new people took me to the Doctor, and they were given bad news. They were told I had a birth defect called PDA which the vet sites say is Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Basically this means that I have a hole in my heart. So my new people returned me to my breeder. That was bad news. She took me to her Doctor, and he confirmed that I have PDA. But the good news was that it could be corrected with surgery. But my breeder didn't want to pay the $2,500.00 to have the surgery done. Instead she wanted to send me to Doggie Heaven, That was very bad news. Elvis did not want to leave the building. But the Doctor talked her out of it, and instead she gave me to Southern Nevada Pug Rescue. That was excellent news. But then there was more bad news. They didn't have the money to pay for the surgery either. And they were told that they had to do the surgery within the next 4 weeks. If they have the surgery done, the Doctor told them that I will be able to live a healthy, happy, ordinary puggy life. But without the surgery, well I don't have much time. SNPR did not have the money in time. This was bad news.

Then we all got some good news! PugSavers came to our rescue and offered to pay for my` surgery!. I heard their people and our people say that we would all just hope and pray that the good people who read my story might open up their hearts and send a little money to help pay for my surgery. This was the goodest news I heard. I'm going in for my surgery on Friday. I will be a brand new puppy when it is done! And as my namesake says, "Thank you, thank you very much!"

My name is RJ and I have been through a lot! When I came to PugSavers, my skin looked like that of an elephant, I had such bad allergies. My back legs were painful and one was so bad that it didn't even have a socket to pop out of, so I had patellar surgery on both of my legs. I also have some shots for my allergies that will make me feel much more comfortable.

I'm about 6 years old, a little diva girl, so I would probably do best with only one other pug. I love my people and would love to have a person of my own

My name is Apache and I'm a handsome 6 year old fawn fellow. I'm a bigger boy (around 24 lbs) but not fat...I'm just large boned. I get along well with cats and I'm OK with other dogs, but I really love my people! I didn't get a lot of socialization so I can get a little scared at first, but I can get right up into the bed and snuggle with the best of them.

I play with toys by myself but I haven't learned to play with other dogs yet. My foster brother is really great about tying to help me get over this, so we will see what time will bring.

Fora rescue pug, I'm lucky since have no health problems (that PugSavers knows about anyway). Please consider adding me to your home! I really would be grateful!

My name is Scooter and I'm a little (11 pound) pug mix. We're not sure what I'm mixed with, could be Chihuahua or schipperke, but I'm only about 2 years old.
I am a little fearful and it does take me a little time to warm up to someone, but when I get to know you, I will give you little kisses and snuggle up next to you. I need someone who will be patient with me (when you put your hand near my head, I flinch) but I got lucky and have a great foster mommy and daddy who are working with me.
Thanks for considering me!

My name is Tiny Tim, or Timmy for short. The first 5 years of my life were very difficult for me. See, I was born with some pretty bad problems with my legs and my owners would not have surgery to help me out. My back legs have severe luxating patellas (slipping knees) which makes me very wobbly in the back, and my front legs seem "frozen" in place, and I can't use them very well. I was kept outside and since I have trouble getting to my food and water, I was only 10 pounds when I came to PugSavers. I manage to get from place to place when I want to, but it isn't in any way you would consider normal. I kind of hop and contort my body to get it to move, but I have managed.

Originally I had my birth mom to keep me company outside (she was only 8 months older than me), but she died and all I had to keep me company was a stuffed toy. The very first night my new foster mom had me in her home, I knew I was the luckiest pug alive and she lets me cuddle next to her and she gives me lots of love and makes sure I can eat and drink. I cried when she went to bed and I couldn't touch her, but then she left me in bed. I am happiest when I can cuddle up to her or up to my foster pug brother. In many ways I seem like a puppy, because I am experiencing things for the first time, like living in the house and being able to cuddle with people a lot and getting lots of love. I've even heard them call me a "love sponge" 'cause I'm just soaking up all this attention!

UPDATE 3/14/05
Good news! The two mast cell tumors were removed in what is called a "punch" biopsy with only a local anesthetic because we were afraid to put Timmy under because of the diaphragmatic hernia. The mast cell tumors were both Grade 1's! Our vet, Dr. Iain Grant of UCD Veterinary Teaching Hospital said that is basically like saying that the tumor is benign. Timmy will not need any further surgery or chemotherapy of any kind at this time. Of course, Mast Cell disease is a strange thing and it is not uncommon for a dog to get more tumors down the road. The protocol for these tumors is just to have them removed and sent off to the lab to see what grade they are. We'll keep our fingers and paws crossed that this is the last time Timmy ever even has to hear the words "mast cell tumor."

Physically, the next challenge for Timmy will be to learn to use the front end cart that is currently being built for him by Eddie's Wheels. We hope that with the use of the cart, his back legs may be able to get stronger and his luxating patellas will not bother him as much. We will continue to get him periodic chiropractic or other physical therapy as needed.

On the personality front, Tiny Tim is an amazing dog! He has been with us in PugSavers for more than a year now. He just loooooves breakfast and dinner time and scurries over to the kitchen and barks and licks his lips until he gets his food! (It helps that his foster mom makes home-cooked meals.) He has also gotten possessive of his food and his foster mom and will snap at any other dogs who get too close. He really does not like big dogs ... and believes in the "first bite" theory: If he bites them first they will leave him alone. Needless to say, it is important that we keep him away from big dogs :-). Part of this is just insecurity and we are working with him to overcome these issues. He can cuddle with the best of them and wants to be right next to you in bed, sometimes putting his whole head on your cheek. How can you not fall in love with that?

Please Help!

My name is Tigre and I'm a Chug, a Pug/Chihuahua mix. I'm only about 2 years old and I have a lot of energy. I also can be an escape artist so whoever adopts me needs to be very vigilant. (I even ended up at the pound that way!) I am very sweet and loving and my foster home says I have very good manners. I'm also really good with the potty training thing. I did have what appeared to be a seizure while at my foster home so they are watching me carefully and I just had a course of antibiotics so maybe that can get rid of the problem. I am under Dr. Byam's excellent care so anything PugSavers can do for me, I know they will. We will keep any potential adopters updated on my condition. Thanks for considering me!

Tigre

My name is Buddy and I am around 8-10 years old. I was found as a stray at the Sacramento pound with a pug girl. They found my original owner, but since they were going to have to have me neutered as it was my 2nd "incarceration," they didn't want me. They had been using us to breed. I am very sweet and loving, but I did have 2 "incidents." They aren't exactly a seizure, but I can't stand up when I have them, although I can hear you. PugSavers has been taking me over to UC Davis Vet Teaching Hospital for examinations and hopefully they can find out what is wrong with me. I'm SO happy I ended up with people who are willing to help find out what is wrong with me, even if it costs money. They told me there are wonderful people out there who will make donations to help with my care, so I sure hope they are right!

UPDATE NOVEMBER 15:

The potassium bromide has been helping Buddy tremendously and he now rarely has seizures. He is so very sweet and loving and is hoping that someone will open up their heart to him.

My name is Chiquita and I am a very sweet little girl. I am 7 1/2 years old and can you believe I just had a litter of puppies a few months ago? Sad, huh? But now I am getting great care. My former owners were not taking very good care of me and I had worms and really bad dry eye that was very painful for me. PugSavers now is putting nice medicine in my eyes to take away the pain and they are also treating my worms. I'm going in for my spay in a few weeks and then I'll be ready to go. I'm spunky for my age and I just loooooove to play with toys. You'll often find me walking around, squeaking one of my stuffed toys. I'm good with other pugs and with cats and I love to lean on my person and get lots of love! Oh, and I give a lot of love back too.

My name is Lilo and I am about 10 years old. My foster mom lets everyone know I am a female because I always get mistaken for a male. I don't think she knows what she is talking about. I am blind in one eye but that doesn't bother me. All I want to do is love you and to be loved back. If you forget to love me, I'll remind you by tapping you with my paw. I would be best as the only pug because I really do love ALL of the attention.

Lilo

My name is Elliot and I'm a little man, about 2-3 years old. I have really bad flea allergies so my forever home is going to have to keep me "flea free." I really like to play and I am just learning this "live indoors, go potty outdoors" thing. That's why I have that cool little belly band on in my picture. I've been on Prednisone for my itching for my allergies so that means I have to go more too, but my foster mom is reaaaaallly patient with me.

My name is Sally and they think I am a pug with a little bit of chi in me. I'm a little distrustful of new people at first, but once I get to know you and like you, you're mine! I enjoy being loved and sitting in your lap and I love to snuggle with my person at night. I likes squeaky toys and love to play with the cats. I like to chase them but I don't attack them. A mean cat would hate me. I don't do well with aggressive dogs since I will hold my own, so I should probably be with a mellow male pug. I might need surgery on my patella so I need stairs to get on and off the couch and I need someone who will get me the surgery if I need it. Could that be you?

HOSPICE PUGS
Occasionally a pug comes along who has significant medical issues and/or is quite elderly or has special needs which few people are willing to deal with, and so they go unadopted for some time. We want these pugs to be able to be cared for and loved in a home where they are not thought of as foster dogs, but as permanent family members. Because the financial burden of caring for these dog may be a concern for someone who would otherwise open up their hearts and homes to these dogs, we have developed an alternative program called "Hospice." A person or a family accepts these dogs into their homes as their own "forever dog," but PugSavers will be there to help take care of the medical needs of the dog. Many hospice homes actually help out with the medical bills, but PugSavers will be there to help with the costs and will assure that the dogs get good medical care during whatever time they may have remaining.

If you are interested in becoming a hospice home, please fill out an adoption application and indicate HOSPICE at the top of the first page.

If you would like to make a donation to help support a specific pug or pug mix or the hospice program in general, please click here.

Meet Peachy and Pugsley. These two little angels had been used by backyard breeders for many litters of puppies. Because the person who had been given the pugs by their breeder was very sick and could no longer take care of them, their original owner was going to put them down, but a kind caretaker sought PugSavers out. Peachy was about 10 and Pugsley around 14 and they were in terrible shape. Pugsley had a tumor the size of a tennis ball by his rectum, was not neutered. had abscessed teeth, and suffered from bad arthritis. He slept sitting up for more than a month because he was used to being confined in a small crate. Peachy was diagnosed as heartworm positive, had kidney stones and ongoing bladder infections, dental disease , and was not spayed. We were scared that removing Pugsley’s tumor would leave him with no bowel control but amazingly the opposite happened and he ended up having more feeling and better control. Peachy began an ongoing treatment for the heartworm and a few months later she developed pyometra, an infection in her uterus which is often fatal. While it was scary to do surgery with her heartworm, Dr. Kelly Byam amazingly successfully spayed her which will now help her fight some of her ongoing bladder infections. When she was x-rayed for the pyometra we also saw that her hip had been broken before she came to us and never fixed so that causes some ongoing pain for her as well. But the change in these 2 pugs has been nothing short of a miracle. While Peachy would always save some of her kibble for her beloved Pugsley, fearful that he would not have enough to eat, they both now heartily eat their meals. Peachy has learned what toys are and will now build a fort of her toys around her as she lounges on a pillow on the couch (where she gets to on her personal doggie steps). It has taken Peachy almost a year to trust her foster mom enough to lounge on a warm lap.

Both dogs will have significant ongoing medical costs for the rest of their lives (Pugsley gets acupuncture and both dogs are on a plethora of medications and supplements), but they have a wonderful, loving foster mom who is teaching them what it means to be a pug and to be loved.

My name is Sissy. I did have a home but they dropped me off at a pound in the Central Valley and claimed I had an incontinence problem. Didn't they know that oldsters like me rarely get adopted and that it can be a death sentence to leave me there? Luckily for me the kind folks at PugSavers heard about me and took me in to their hospice program. I've already had $500 in vet bills (I came in with kennel cough and several lumps and bumps that they are having checked out). My foster Mommy says I am a really good girl and awfully sweet and that I haven't shown any signs of incontinence. If you would like to help with my ongoing vet bills, PugSavers would really appreciate any help you can offer!

Hi! We're Buster and Baby. Our Mommy got very sick and can't watch us anymore. We've been together all of our lives (well, at least since we can remember). So, we want to always be together (please?). We're both around 10 or eleven years old. Buster is a boy - a pug and terrier mix, and has pretty much no teeth so prefers soft food - wouldn't you? Baby the girl, is a pug and cocker-spaniel mix and is pretty sweet, though I'll bark a bit when I have to.

We're both about 20 pounds and under and are trying to keep our youthful shapes. We are so looking forward to our forever home. Our foster mommy and daddy already have SO MANY babies to take care of (but they do love us). They say we're VERY sweet and we do get along with all the other babies. They say that Buster is a little shy but a real sweetheart and they say Baby is, well, a BABY!

My name is Toto and I'm what you would call a miracle pug. I ended up in an animal shelter in the Bay Area. Somehow, a nice lady named Kathy in San Jose heard about me and posted about my plight on a pug message board that people read from all over the country. A pug lover in Minnesota named Lisa read my story and called Roxane who she knew was with PugSavers. They have never met in person but became friends on-line when Lisa's beloved pug Puggy passed away a few months ago.

When PugSavers got the call about me it was 3:15 PM on Saturday and the shelter closed at 4:00 and would not reopen until Tuesday. I was a 2 hour drive away from them and they didn't know anyone who was close enough to go get me in 45 minutes! They didn't even have the name of the shelter or a phone number. They had to make about a dozen calls until they found the shelter and then it was only an answering machine message. People had been told that I was going to be euthanized that night, that I was actually "overdue" to be put down and I should have been put to sleep that day! They were frantic!

Finally they got a hold of a real person and they agreed to let me live until the next day. The shelter said that they had contacted another rescue group but that they would not take me because I was too old and sick so they had not looked any further. PugSavers told them they didn't care, so the shelter agreed to have a humane officer open up on Sunday for them to get me.

Some nice people came and took me to my new foster home where there are lots of other pugs to snuggle with and a human mommy and daddy that even let me sleep in bed with them! They are calling me Toto because I look a lot like another pug they had and loved and rescued who was named Otto and he went to the Bridge a few months ago.

I'm about 8 to 10 years old, and I'm totally blind. I get along OK and I'm really mellow. I have a big tumor on my gums that they had biopsied yesterday and they should know the results in a few days. It doesn't bother me tho, I can still eat and drink and most importantly, cuddle and get loved! I'm a little on the, ahem, "fluffy" side, weighing in at almost 35 pounds. I need to lose between 10 and 12 pounds and it will help me be able to walk a lot better.

I know there is a good chance that no one will be willing to adopt me because I am older and have some issues, but PugSavers has a program that they call "Hospice". That means that I get to live out my life with someone who will love and care for me and treat me like their own but PugSavers will pay all of the medical bills. That way I will get to live out my life with love and care and the people who care for me don't have to worry if I have big medical bills. (PugSavers does, but they know that there are lots of great people out there who help them out financially for pugs just like me!).
I have found a wonderful family who has agreed to be my hospice home but there are other pugs that will need similar care so hopefully other people will be there for them when PugSavers gets the call.
So as you see, because of the love of so many people for pugs, I was able to escape the executioner and get a new leash on life! Thank you to everyone who thought an old pug was worth fighting for!!
